Recently I was searching for a light version of Linux which can bring back life to my old lethargic Dell Inspiron 6400. It has intel centrino duo 1.83Ghz processor with 1 GB RAM.
After much searching I finally decided upon Linux Lite 3.2. It is based on Ubuntu LTS, it's lightweight and easy to use Linux distributions. If you are new to Linux and want to install Linux on your older hardware then Linux Lite is a good choice for you. Linux Lite uses XFCE desktop environment that is lightweight and easy to use. Besides its light weightedness another reason to choose Linux Lite is its ease of install.
MINIMUM RECOMMENDED SPECIFICATIONS FOR LINUX LITE:
CPU: 700MHz processor
RAM: 512mb ram
RESOLUTION: VGA screen 1024x768 resolution
The step wise procedure I followed to intall this is as follows:
Sometimes while installing linux the boot loader Grub gets corrupted. When this happens we can not boot into the installed operating system in the PC. Do not worry, it can easily be corrected using GUI based software named boot-repair.
In case your boot loader get corrupted, log in to the live linux using the USB and open the terminal. Then run the following commands:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair
boot-repair.
The Boot Repair window will appear after you run the boot-repair command. After it scans your system, click the Recommended repair button to repair GRUB2 with a single click. More detailed instructions for boot-repair can be found here.
Right now I am writing this article on my new 10 year old laptop which was otherwise unusable prior to installing Linux lite. Happy Linuxing :)

The step wise procedure I followed to intall this is as follows:
- If you are writing the ISO to a USB on Windows, please use Win32DiskImager - https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/. Install this software and run it.
- Choose the ISO image of linux lite and the USB drive in which you want to write it and you are ready to go.
- Plug the USB into the PC where you want to install the Linux Lite and boot from USB. Login to the live desktop is automatic.
- Once you login to the live Linux from USB you can install the Linux Lite. Rest of the steps are well described in this video.
